Strong potential of railway freight transport in Serbia – Entrepreneurs from over 10 countries to attend conference on October 31 in Belgrade

In a milestone year for Serbian railways, Belgrade will host the first international conference, “Railway Freight Transport – Perspectives and Solutions,” on October 31.

Organized by PlutonLogistics, the event will take place at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Old Mill, with over 100 participants from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Hungary, and other countries already confirmed to attend. The conference will bring together representatives from railway and logistics operators, intermodal terminals, ports, cargo owners, as well as government and academic institutions.

With rail currently accounting for around 20% of total freight transport in Serbia, its potential to play an even more prominent role in the future is clear. This is reflected in the growing interest from both domestic and invernational investors, whose activities have made the railway freight transport market in Serbia more dynamic than ever. The presence of 17 private railway freight operators in Serbia, couplied with ongoing investments in the development of intermodal terminals, the opening of new lines, as well as large-scale infrastructure improvement projects, underscores the railways’ future role as the backbone of sustainable transport systems.

The conference will be officially opened by representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Transport Community, and the Faculty of Transport in Belgrade. After the opening, panel discussions and individual presentations by representatives from domestic and international companies, the Customs Administration, the Serbian Logistics Centers (Batajnica Intermodal Terminal), the Commodity Exchange, the Association Srbijatransport, and others will address some of the key issues within this sector:

  • Which goods can be transported to and from Serbia by train, and under what conditions?
  • What are the savings in costs and emissions when opting for rail transport?
  • Which routes are most developed today, and which will gain momentum in the future?
  • What are the advantages of intermodal transport, and what are clients’ experiences?
  • What services do private railway operators in Serbia offer?
  • What actions is the government taking to support the development of railway freight transport?

Sponsors of the “Railway Freight Transport – Perspectives and Solutions” conference include MBOX Terminals, METRANS, DB Cargo, Adria Kombi, cargo-partner, and duisport. Media support is provided by portals Biznis.rs, Sve o Novcu, scm.hr, and www.supply-chain.gr.

Railway transport in Serbia dates back to 1884, with the opening of the Belgrade-Niš railway line. This year, on the 140th anniversary of this milestone, the country is undergoing a comprehensive modernization of its infrastructure, with the newly constructed high-speed rail section from Novi Sad to Subotica expected to open by the end of the year. Even larger projects lie ahead, with plans to build and modernize around 2,000 kilometers of track in Serbia over the next few years.

PlutonLogistics, the conference organizer, is a specialized regional media platform that has been connecting experts from the transport, logistics, supply chain, and trade sectors since 2013.
